Berlin Birth Preparation Classes in English https://birthandbeyond-berlin.3000signes.com/berlin-birth-preparation-classes-in-english/ Mon, 25 May 2020 15:59:28 +0000 http://birthandbeyondberlin.com/?p=276

Birth preparation classes are a great place to gain a basic knowledge of what to expect during your upcoming birth and immediate postpartum. Many families enjoy the fact that their class is full of other expectant parents they can connect with throughout the rest of pregnancy and especially for play-dates once the babes are bigger. Having a space where birther and partner can take time to connect and educate themselves, is also a major benefit for taking these classes.

I encourage my birth doula clients to take a birth prep class early on in their pregnancy. Information and education are key in having positive birth outcomes. Knowing your options, risks, and potential outcomes means you and your partner can advocate for a birth that aligns with your wishes. Taking a class early gives you a solid foundation of information to build onto.

Inviting a doula into your birth bubble is a great way to add a layer of knowledge, advocacy, and support. Once my birth clients have taken an antenatal class, our next prenatal meeting together is dedicated to going over their birth preferences, concerns they have about possible interventions and their indications, as well as answering questions about, or diving deeper into, what they learned in their class.

My personalized prenatal education sessions (LINK back to my education page) are also complementary to the standard weekend courses held in midwifery practices.

Since there is so much to remember, parents often worry about forgetting all the important information when they actually need it on the big day, but if you have a doula supporting you, then you basically have a cheat-sheet on hand!

There are many different models of classes offered here, so find one that aligns with your needs and views. Below is a list of childbirth education classes offered in Berlin in English.

How to Find a Midwife in Berlin https://birthandbeyond-berlin.3000signes.com/how-to-find-a-midwife-in-berlin/ Tue, 06 Aug 2019 12:53:57 +0000 http://birthandbeyondberlin.com/?p=313

Doulas and midwives offer complimentary support surrounding the birth of a newborn mother and baby. Having the care of one does not negate the value of adding the other to your birth or postpartum team.

Coming from the US, where families barely have time to rest, recover and bond after birth before it’s back to work, I am pleasantly surprised by the supportive perinatal culture here in Germany.

The fact that your health insurance will pay for a midwife to visit you in the comfort of your home during the 4th trimester still seems almost unbelievable to me! My cultural background tells me this is a luxury, but the doula in me deeply feels this should be the bare-minimum standard world-wide.

While growing families are very well supported in Germany, if you are pregnant in Berlin you may have noticed the midwife crisis. The high demand of a baby-boom and low supply of midwives, can leave families feeling like finding a postpartum midwife is a full time job.

Below are some resources for finding the additional layer of support you and your family deserve.

  • Check out the midwife page on Facebook. Request to join, post your estimated due date, zip code/neighborhood, and languages spoken. Post here frequently, as midwives often have last minute availability.
  • The German website, Geburt in Berlin, has a very comprehensive list of midwives, as well as hospitals, birth centers, and other great resources. I recommend translating the page to your preferred language and use their locations to narrow down your search.
  • This midwife search website helps to narrow down midwives available in your zip code during your estimated due date.

  • You can call this midwife hotline and they will help to connect you with care in your area.

  • This is another midwife list where you can search by location, date and preferred language.

  • Google the midwifery practices or birth centers closest to your home, and email them directly asking for their availability.
